A Vision Based Approach To Well-Being For ADHD Moms

Uncategorized Apr 02, 2021

A few years back I posed the question to a group of moms about how you know when you’ve been slack on filling your cup or, in other words, how you know when your self-care efforts (or lack of) are not supporting you and I loved this response “The dragon starts talking”.  Karen confided that when she slacks on her self-care “I get crabby, the negative self-talk amps up and the overwhelm sets in.”

As moms with ADHD we know that it doesn’t take much to unleash the dragon.  And, I don’t know about you but that’s exactly what it feels like to me.  Once the dragon is unleashed it takes a great deal of energy to reel her back in.

As I say this I think about how a doctor once told me that it’s easier to stay ahead of pain rather than getting rid of it because once it’s gained momentum it’s challenging to turn it around.  It’s the same thing with the dragon.

One of the most loving things we can do for ourselves and our families is to be proactive when it comes to our well-being…filling our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual cups on a regular basis with a Vision Based Approach to Well-Being.

Now, I’m not perfect at this, in fact sometimes I really suck at it.  But, what I know about life is that it offers a brand new baby moment every second and a brand new baby day with each sunrise giving us an opportunity to do things differently next time.

So…give yourself some grace.  Please!  Don’t beat yourself up.  Being a mom is the hardest job in the world.  Being a mom of neurodiverse kiddos makes this job even more challenging.  And, being a mom with neurodiverse kiddos when you have ADHD or some other sort of neurodiversity makes it even more challenging.

Remember that we’re all doing the best we can in every moment.  And, honestly, just by being here and listening to this episode, I know that you’re an amazing mom and that your kids are fortunate to have you in their corner.

A Vision Based Approach To Well-Being For ADHD Moms

#1 WHAT A Vision Based Approach To Well-Being is

It’s all about taking a good look at the 4 Pillars of Well-Being – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual, creating a well-being vision and making choices that move you toward the way you want to feel.

You can think of your well-being vision as an energetic blueprint for the way you want to be in the world.  Just like an architect creates a blueprint before building a structure, you’re going to create a blueprint for what you want when it comes to your well-being.

It’s super simple and super powerful.

#2 WHY your ADHD mind is going to LOVE it

It gives your mind something important and interesting to focus on.  It’s soooo simple but sooooo powerful.  The ADHD mind can hyperfocus on what it’s interested in.  When we give it something interesting and important to focus on we can keep it from running amuck – which it’s really good at!

In all the seeking I’ve done throughout my life, and let me tell you I’ve done a lot of seeking…for decades.  And, honestly, I’m a life-long learner so I’m in this for the long haul.  But, I digress…

Anyway, in all the seeking I’ve done to quote unquote heal myself over the years I’ve discovered that living a vision driven life is a-mazeballs when it comes to managing ADHD.

At the beginning of the pandemic after the world had been sent home I was checking in with my clients during a group coaching call to see how everyone was doing.  One of them said that she felt kind of guilty because while everyone around her was freaking out, she was calm and confident in where she was going.  She said it felt like we had been in training for this.

Living a vision driven life is truly the cure for overwhelm and it makes decision making a breeze.  When you have a crystal clear vision that you’re super excited about it’s almost as if the vision pulls you toward it.

#3 HOW to create your own unique Well-Being Vision.

A Well-Being vision is a blueprint for what you want.  For the mom you want your kids to see.

You’re going to create a blueprint for what you want when it comes to your well-being.  That being said, you might want to pause to get a pen and paper.

  • Make a list of your absolutes in 2 columns.  One column of absolute yeses and one column of absolute nos.
  • Turn your absolute nos into solutions.  Cross out each no and write the solution in the absolute yes column
  • Use your absolute yes list as your GPS.  Whenever you’re faced with a decision, consult your absolute yes list.  If it’s not a yes, it’s a no.

Take note here.  I said what you WANT.  Not what you DON’T want.  There’s a huge difference.  Focusing on what you WANT is a vision based approach.  Focusing on what you DONT want is the traditional approach.

Like I said earlier, one of the most loving things we can do for ourselves and our families is to be proactive when it comes to our well-being…filling our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual cups on a regular basis with a Vision Based Approach to Well-Being.
